Background Information About Research on Tap
:
The Oklahoma State University Division of the Vice President for Research, in partnership with Iron Monk Brewery, offer an opportunity for the public to meet and interact with experts from a wide range of research fields at OSU. Researchers join Dr. Kenneth Sewell, the Vice President for Research, to have a conversation regarding their research and the impacts it has on their field, their students, the public and the community. These conversations are structured to be community outreach/engagement sessions. Each session is approximately 20-25 minutes of dialogue between Dr. Sewell and the researcher, followed by questions and discussion from the audience. These sessions are in-person and not live video-streamed; however, they are recorded and later made available in video and podcast forms on InsideOSU.
Typically, these sessions follow one of two models
:
1) General to Specific: The faculty expert explains their overall program of research; then Dr. Sewell asks probing questions to drill into specific aspects. (The is the most common model.)
2) Specific to General: The faculty expert explains a single research project; then Dr. Sewell will ask how the project fits the broader scope of the discipline and the researcher’s overall program of research (i.e., broadening back out).
If you would like to be considered for a guest spot
in an upcoming Research on Tap session, or if you would like to
suggest a colleague
, please provide and submit the following information via this online form. (For simplicity, the language below presumes self-nomination; if you are nominating a colleague, the needed information remains the same.)
1) A 1-paragraph (non-jargon) “pitch”. Think of how you might describe your area of research to your distant family members over Thanksgiving dinner (what you do, why is it relevant, etc.). The key is to communicate your line of research in a manner accessible to an intelligent, but lay audience.
2) Provide (at minimum) two examples of relevant scholarly outputs (e.g., publications, grant proposals, images of art works, etc.) as attachments.
3) Provide a suggested "zippy" (not "academic") title for the session. It may be helpful to look at the titles of previous sessions at
research.okstate.edu/rot
to get an idea of what we mean by "zippy".
Please know: We plan our Research on Tap guest schedule several months in advance, so submit right away for consideration.
